Dust Front RTS is a single-player real-time strategy game built by one person, and it has not shipped yet. That combination shapes everything on this wiki: there is a large free demo with thousands of hours played against it, a developer who publishes long design posts, and a long list of things that simply have not been said out loud. This page maps what can actually be answered, sends you to the right page for each question, and marks the gaps honestly instead of filling them.
What this guide index covers
The wiki's Dust Front RTS guide content splits into four areas. Each has its own page, and each is written against the same rule: if it is not on the Steam store page, in a developer news post, or in the pinned demo FAQ, it is labelled unconfirmed rather than guessed.
- How to play — the MCV, the harvester economy, strike groups and reinforcements, tactical pause, and the control list players have compiled themselves.
- How to win — the developer's own strategic advice, which is unusually blunt about what the game rewards.
- The demo — what it contains, what update D-30 changed, and how it has been received on Steam.
- The gaps — release date, price, save behaviour and every unit stat number, none of which have been published.
The design target the developer describes is C&C-style RTS combat wrapped in a campaign in the spirit of Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, sitting on a global strategic layer he compares to Total War. A single campaign is expected to run around 15 hours. Knowing that tells you what kind of game you are learning: tactical battles matter, but they are embedded in something bigger.
That layering is why a single guide cannot cover the game in one pass. A page about winning a battle and a page about running a campaign region would be answering different questions, and only the first of those can be answered with confidence today. The strategic layer has been described but not shown in playable form.
Start here if you have never played
Read in this order and the game makes sense much faster.
- Skim the demo page, then install the demo. It is free, it is still downloadable, and it is the only part of Dust Front RTS anyone can actually play right now.
- Play one run on default settings. The mission type is fixed and the map is procedural, so you will not spoil a scripted story by experimenting.
- Read the tips page. The developer published three tips of his own, and they explain why a normal RTS instinct — hovering over a small elite squad — underperforms here.
- Come back to the how-to-play page when the controls bite. The interface is dense and the control list is player-compiled, not documented by the developer.
There is a basic tutorial in the demo. If it ends early or throws you into the fight prematurely, that was a known bug and it was fixed in D-30.
One setting is worth deciding before your first run. The demo lets you configure a starting Parts budget in the pre-battle setup screen, and 5,000 Parts is the value most commonly recommended for a first run by community players. That recommendation is player-reported rather than a developer default, so treat it as a starting point and adjust once you know what your opening actually costs.
The three ideas the game is built on
Everything else on the tips page hangs off three sentences the developer wrote for the demo launch. In his words, this game is not about squads, it is about battalions: companies of tanks and the thunder of artillery, with the choice between trading armies and fighting with elite veterans left to you. Second, economy is everything — if you are short on resources, move your base, develop a passive economy, and keep production running continuously. Third, control the frontline, because holding too narrow a front lets the enemy hit you with their whole army before a passive economy can pay off.
Two more framing points are worth internalising early. The game is deliberately asymmetrical: it is not balanced, and you will sometimes face enemies superior in both number and strength. And artillery is described as an ultimatum force, answerable only with heavy losses, counter-battery fire, or aircraft from tactical support abilities.
The unit page that best illustrates both points is the Dreadnought, the Empire's super-heavy artillery piece. It fires at long range guided by spotters, trades mobile fire for range and accuracy when it deploys, and can be rebuilt into a heavy howitzer at the cost of that mobile fire. Everything else in the roster exists to buy it time.
What is confirmed and what is not
Confirmed by the developer or the Steam page: the game is single-player only, ships on Windows only, supports English and Russian, and lists a minimum specification of an Intel i3-3250, 4 GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 1050 and 2 GB of storage. Four factions are designed — Empire, Mutants, Robots and Rebels — with one campaign, for the Empire, planned at release. Systems confirmed in detail include tactical pause, spotter-directed artillery, differentiated vehicle armour, wreck and debris mechanics, and macro buildings that double as technology unlocks.
Fast answers to common questions
- Is there multiplayer or co-op? No, and there will not be. The developer's reasoning: the project does not need it, the multiplayer community would inevitably be too small while still demanding the lion's share of support, and he would end up choosing between two fires.
- Are there redemption codes? No. Dust Front RTS has no redemption codes of any kind, and there is no console or mod support, so traditional cheats do not exist either.
- When does it release? To be announced. His position is that he will not answer until he makes an official announcement about the launch date, because he is not a fan of postponements.
- Can I save mid-mission? Unconfirmed. Campaign progress is stored at the global-map level and veterans carry between battles, but no manual or autosave spec has been published for either the demo or the full game.
