The MLRS is one of the most searched Dust Front RTS unit names and one of the least documented. Everything specific that players know about it comes from hands-on play with the demo's reinforcement system, not from the store page or a developer post. This page keeps those two categories strictly apart.

What the MLRS is — and what is actually confirmed

The honest answer is that less is confirmed than most pages claim. Rocket artillery appears in the game and can be fielded, but there is no official unit description, no stat block and no developer statement describing its role in the roster.

The name itself deserves a caveat. "Vortex" appears alongside "MLRS" in community usage as a name for the vehicle, but it is not a developer-confirmed name. The same caution applies to other names circulating in community 3D model tags — for example "T-50 / T-50B", which is tagged as an Empire main battle tank with no official source behind it. This wiki treats those as community labels, not canon, and you should too.

What is confirmed is the ecosystem the MLRS sits inside. The Steam store page lists "vehicles of various purposes plus their arsenals" as one of the four unit categories, and the developer has written at length about how artillery and spotters work. A rocket artillery vehicle fits that framework even though the vehicle itself is undocumented.

Deployment: the catch players keep reporting

The single most repeated player report about the MLRS is the deployment step. Each unit must be individually told where to deploy before it can fire — there is no one-key "deploy in place" for a whole group.

That has real consequences for how a battery is handled. A group of six is six separate orders, and every reposition costs you that same attention again. In practice this pushes the MLRS towards a static role: pick a firing position, deploy, and only move when the front has genuinely shifted, rather than leapfrogging a rocket battery forward alongside an advance.

Community play reports describe the comparison as a Red Alert 2 V3 rocket launcher crossed with a StarCraft siege tank, which is a fair summary of the trade — enormous reach once set up, nothing at all while moving. A similar per-unit pattern is reported for the Dreadnought, where deployment is also manual and individual, so this looks like a consistent design choice rather than an oversight.

How it plugs into the artillery and spotter system

Rocket artillery in Dust Front RTS does not operate as a standalone damage dealer. It is part of the same artillery-and-spotter loop that governs the Dreadnought, and understanding that loop explains most of the unit's behaviour.

Artillery is described by the developer as "a kind of ultimatum force". His list of counters is deliberately short: excessive losses depending on army composition, other artillery counter-fire, or aircraft from tactical support abilities. Spotter squads are the hinge — they are artillerymen who are also snipers, and a squad can direct heavy artillery fire at any distance. Free artillery in the required mode aims at the target immediately once correction is completed.

That last mechanic has a failure mode worth planning around. In the infantry squad model, the squad member carrying the artillery guidance devices dies first, so a damaged spotter squad can silently lose the ability to direct artillery while still looking alive on screen. Healing is how squads are refilled, so healing your spotters is effectively repairing your artillery's targeting. A D-30 fix also closed the bug where spotters aiming too near the artillery caused it to fire on itself.

Range, shell arc and spread

The developer has described one artillery behaviour directly, and it applies to any long-range piece. When artillery fires beyond its auto-attack range, the cannons change angle and the shells fly on a more curved trajectory with greater spread.

This is the trade-off that defines long-range fire in this game: you gain reach and you pay for it in precision. It favours area targets — clustered infantry, dense base layouts, static defensive lines — over single hard point targets. It is also why spotters matter more the further out you reach, because correction is what turns a spread pattern into a hit.

Whether the MLRS shares this arc-and-spread behaviour exactly, or whether rocket artillery uses different rules again, is not stated by the developer. The behaviour is confirmed for artillery as a class, and applying it to the MLRS specifically is a reasonable inference rather than a fact.

Can you build it? Unconfirmed

This is the most important open question and there is no answer yet. At the time of player reporting, the MLRS could not be built in the demo and could only be obtained through the pre-battle reinforcement screen. The demo pre-unlocks units and buildings from some high-tier doctrines, which normally makes top-tier gear available — so its absence from the build menu there is a meaningful signal, but not proof about the full game.

How it compares with the Dreadnought

The Dreadnought is the better-documented alternative and the safer planning assumption. It is confirmed as the Empire's super-heavy artillery unit: a land battleship with a triple turret, a mobile mode that fires on the move, and a deployed siege mode with greatly increased range, accuracy and rate of fire. It fires at long range guided by spotters, and it can be rebuilt into a heavy howitzer for the highest firepower in the Empire.

The practical difference is reversibility. A Dreadnought can keep shooting while advancing, which makes it usable as part of a moving formation. A rocket artillery vehicle that must deploy to fire cannot. If you are choosing where to spend reinforcement budget, the Dreadnought is the piece with confirmed behaviour behind it; the MLRS is the piece you take when you want a static rocket battery and are willing to work with an undocumented unit.
